2005 May 14 - Brits protected in Uzbekistan
British tennis players who travelled to Uzbekistan for the Andijan Futures tournament have been
escorted under armed guard to the British Consulate due to ongoing violent protests in the country.
Hundreds of Uzbeks have been killed following a gathering in Andijan's main square on Friday. The protesters
are calling for "justice" and "freedom".
EU leaders have already criticized Uzbek leaders for not paying enough attention to human rights, the rule of
law and relieving poverty.
The players affected are: Arvind Parmar, Jamie Delgado, Richard Bloomfield, David Sherwood, Jonny Marray,
Dan Kiernan, coach James Trotman and referee Carl Baldwin.
