2004 Jan 07 - Henman into 2004 with a Doha win
Tim Henman started 2004 just as he ended 2003, with a straight sets victory. This time it was in the
first round of the Qatar Exxon Mobil Open against David Sanchez of Spain (6-4 6-0), who hasn't been past
the first round of any tournament since September 2003.
This was just the type of opponent Tim would have hoped to face in order to kick-start the New Year -
someone who he could use to help implement the new tactics coach Paul Annacone has been introducing
into the Henman game over the Christmas period.
After the match Tim said:
"I created lots of opportunities. It was pretty obvious it was the first match of the year.
"I wanted to make sure I stayed relaxed and just play. I was pretty sure I would get there.
The second set was obviously pretty convincing."
The last time Tim entered the Qatar Open was way back in 1999, where he was the beaten finalist over 3 sets
against the German Rainer Schuettler (4-6 7-5 1-6).
