2003 February 09 - Bogdanovic success in Davis Cup
Great Britain are defeated by Australia in the Davis Cup, BUT ...
Alex Bogdanovic has been a major success story for British tennis.
Alex overcame the experience of Todd Woodbridge to provide our only win of the tournament in 2 sets victory 6-1 7-6.
With with Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski out through injury, the young guns
Alex Bogdanovic and Alan Makin were given their chance to impress. Lleyton Hewitt
had nothing but praise for Alex after their first meeting earlier in the tournament.
Alex lead 4-2 in the first set, and only lack of experience left the door open for Lleyton to get back
into the set.
On a personal level Alex Bogdanovic was naturally pleased to win his first Davis Cup match. He said:
"It feels really great just to get a win in any match,
whether it's a live or dead rubber."
Our Davis Cup Captain Roger Taylor commented:
"He is a very talented young
man and to get a Davis Cup win so early, in such a big match, is great experience.
Let's hope he can keep building on that."
Unfortunately, having lost to Australia, Great Britain will now face a relegation play-off in September.
With a bit of luck the British number 1 and 2 are fit and well, as a defeat will lead to us dropping out
of the 16 Nation World Group.
